Specialism: Year 7 & 8 Electronics- Making the torch part 2

This week we have completed the making of our torches

we had to cut a slot for our LED

we had to make sure it was wide enough- but not too wide that the LED fell out

then we marked out and cut the hole for the cell

we had to use a twisting motion and not press too hard otherwise it wouldn't cut

then we placed the cell in place

we checked that it worked- the cell had to be close enough to the anodes-
too low and the circuit would not work

one of the sides was placed on the foam to mark out the hole for the split ring

the hole is then punched

double sided tape is put in place along the sides

and then the backing is peeled off

the side is carefully lined up over the foam and then pressed into place

the torch is checked

and the split ring added

students could print one side

but had to show their drawing and rendering skills on the other

our students love their torches

Specialism: Year 7 & 8 Enrichment Final Solution

This week we have been concentrating of our final solution

getting it drawn up on sketchup

completing existing solutions too

working on the final solution- on the computer and by hand

adding parts we struggled to draw on the computer

ensuring we communicate properly

making sure we have different views

using our skills

side views

to ensure our idea is communicated thoroughly

Specialism: Year 7 & 8 Electronics-Making the torch

This week we have been making our torch

We had to finish our final designs so our sides of our torch could be scanned, resized and printed.

We had a deadline to meet

skills to use

 techniques to practice

quality had to be high

Once our designs were printed they had to be cut out

then a template was made

to draw around on the foam- so it is not wasted

our designs are then laminated

for durability and protection

a hole is punched in the laminate in a suitable place for the split ring

the first hole is used as a stencil for the second hole

we are left with foam and laminated sides with holes punched in place

we are ready to finish the torches next week- cut holes for the cell, a slot for the LED, punch a hole in the foam for the split ring, stick it together and attach the split ring- a lot to do but the hardest parts are now complete!

Specialism Year 7 & 8 Enrichment-Choosing the final solution and justifying it

This week we justified our choice for our final solution

we discussed how our solution will impact students, our community and our environment

some of us drew up our final solution on Sketchup

we also started to work on ideas for carvings for the poles

this involved some research

and some drawing

Most of our justifications were positive!

Specialism Year 7 & 8 Electronics-drawing up our final designs

This week we have been finishing our design ideas and choosing our final designs for our torch

we had to use our skills

drawing

lettering

cutting

adding colour

some of our choice of designs are well known

some are cultural

some use our name

all use our skills...

Next week we start making torches!

Specialism: Year 7 & 8 Electronics- Torch design ideas

This week we have started to design our torches

To achieve a high level one of our ideas must be drawn in 3D-
so we learned how to do this and had time to practice

we also drew the circuit diagram for the components- a cell and LED

two of our designs had set criteria- a torch to promote fire safety-
fully communicated to gain higher levels

another design was to promote renewable energy

our other designs were of our choosing

Next week we finalise our choices and start making..
