Specialism Year 8- Data capture on litter

Our focus this term, in Year 8, is our whenua

Year 8's have been looking at how our lunch impacts ourselves our tangata whenua (people of the land)

we collected data on our own lunches and analysed how healthy they are
we also looked at the impact our lunches had on our whenua

we collected data on our litter- whether we could reuse, recycle, compost or whether we throw it into the bin to go to landfill- we did a tally chart and presented our data as a pictogram/pictograph by converting our findings to a percentage

collecting data on types of litter

most of the litter was in the bins

some of it we found on the floor

our findings- up to 80% of our litter was plastic- wrap, gladwrap and could not be recycled- it will end up in land fill...

this is how our lunches impact our whenua- we will begin to look at easy, nutritious ways of changing our habits and relying less on packaging....our focus is still tangata whenua but also now...

manaaki whenua- cherish, conserve, sustain

Technology: 2016 Year 7- I can cook- can't I?

Year 7's

I can cook -can't I?

Our Year 7's were challenged to follow a recipe, weigh, measure and portion correctly to produce quality outcomes- all new skills all without any help!

(they were given some advice about using the scales, measuring with cups and portioning)

estimating the amount of butter we need- before we weigh it

using scales and cup measures- recognising fractions!

the creaming method- creaming the butter and sugar to incorporate air into the mixture

portioning evenly

so they cook evenly

Well done Year 7's- we learned a lot and our reflections noted how we could improve next time

Technology: Year 7 Final outcomes

Our outcomes have been given to our classes

Here are some of the final outcomes

Technology: Year 7 Our final outcomes

We visited our New Entrants and Year 1's with our finished outcomes

they loved the fact that we now had put colour in our designs

they loved spinning this game and adding up the numbers

they made a train of number place value

this game was all about adding up candles

a more traditional game- the students had to use a dice which was new to them

our Samoan games

spin the wheel twice, find the matching cards and complete the sum

spin the wheel read the Samoan word and match the correct number-this game was great for our students who recently arrived at school

put the ice-creams in the bowls and complete the sum

this game became a board game- a dice and counters was used to count along the number line once it was created

our shop sells items that need paying for

we have coins to help us pay

match the Samoan butter and English jam answer to our toast questions

very visual

cookies and chocolate chips help our students with their math

matching the word with the value using trees

Technology: Year 7 Making our outcomes

We have been busy making our final outcomes

we are using the computers to make them to a high level of quality

we have to measure our prototypes then use rulers on the computer to measure our images

we have to be smart when using the computers

we use copy and paste a lot

this keeps our images, words and numbers consistent

it also speeds up the making process

once complete we print out the final outcomes

then we cut them and laminate them to make sure they are durable

some of our designs are too big to laminate in class- we have to use the library laminator

we learnt some new skills- how to draw on the computer

we had to be very accurate

we had to cut out carefully

we used scissors for outside lines and a knife, and cutting mat for inside lines

we had to be resourceful- we needed sides for our pool table

we needed balls for our table too

we used milk bottle tops

we tested our outcomes before we took them to the New Entrant/Year 1's
